Adoptive parents need to be well prepared for their adoption trip. ICANZ staff have travelled several times to India, visited orphanages and spoken with many orphanage staff and CARA officials so we can prepare you for the adoption trip and the weeks after you arrive home. As adoptive parents ourselves, we're well aware of the huge impact of adoption on parents in the early weeks. This seminar presentation is held by ICANZ to prepare you for the practical realities of the trip to your child’s country and the early weeks home with your child. It is required that both parents attend . You can attend any workshop after you register with ICANZ and we received your homestudy report from the NZCA. You must attend before you receive a travel date. It's advisable to attend as soon as possible, as you will then have a clearer understanding of the process ahead.
The seminar is held once a year, but this can vary each year depending on the number of applicants.

This seminar covers the adoption process for adoption in India, what you need to take, what you need to know about Indian culture and orphanage expectations for this trip, typical orphanage care in India and the likely impact on your child, typical child studies/medical reports from Indian orphanages, preparation for transition from orphanage to your home, naming your child, how to get a visa for the child to enter NZ, travelling home with a newly adopted child, living with your child in a hotel, parenting newly adopted children in the first weeks home, post adoption visits, obtaining NZ citizenship after adoption, and much more. A workbook with detailed instructions on the process will be provided.
NB this seminar is NOT a general information evening for those considering adoption but a detailed day for those who are committed to adoption in India with ICANZ. There is a small cost to you, because the cost of ICANZ staff travelling to India, gathering the vital information shared at this workshop, the written material provided, and the ICANZ staff time in preparing for and running this seminar, must be spread across all first time adopting parents who will benefit from this.If you are adopting a second time from India with ICANZ, you do not need to attend unless there has been a significant time gap and the process has changed.
This seminar is separate from the AFS or CYF education seminars on general adoption issues. The focus is specifically Indian adoption- the practical up-to-date details of the process for adoption in India and the early days home with your child. It is also an opportunity to meet other ICANZ families currently adopting to develop a support network and for ICANZ staff to meet you. ICANZ is committing to helping you adopt and we require to meet you in person and ensure you are well prepared before we can represent you in India.
